Schnapps → Linus: What Happens When We Give the Shy Ones Time

Schnapps was never the cat who rushed to the front and demanded to be chosen.

He was painfully shy. The kind of shelter cat who could disappear into the background while the bolder, friendlier cats did their best sales pitches.

But Claire Stratton, DVM, saw him.

She saw beyond the frightened cat in front of her and gave him something shy animals desperately need: time, patience and the chance to feel safe.

And Schnapps began to change.

Today, Schnapps is Linus—and the frightened shelter cat has become a purring, kneading, lap-loving cuddlebug with decidedly individual tastes. He watches Ratatouille. He has opinions about Cheez-Its, whipped cream and salmon. He is still cautious with strangers, but with the person he trusts, he is completely and wonderfully himself.

Years later, a routine microchip check brought Linus back onto AnimalVillageNM’s radar and gave us an unexpected gift: the chance to see what became of one little cat after he left our care.

And his story reminded us of something worth remembering.

The animal you meet in a shelter is not necessarily the animal who will someday share your home.

Fear can hide personality. Stress can hide affection. Shyness can hide an extraordinary capacity for trust and love.

Sometimes the animals who ask for the least are simply waiting for someone willing to give them enough time to become who they were always meant to be.

Don’t overlook the shy ones.
